Horton Emergency Medical Services

Prehospital emergency services (EMS) are an essential component of a comprehensive health care system. Rural residents and visitors to rural areas rely on EMS treatment and transport in the event of an injury or other health emergency. In many areas where the number of emergency calls is too small to support a full-time paid EMS service, volunteers are the mainstay of prehospital emergency care.

Horton Emergency Medical Service (Horton EMS), a department of the Horton Community Hospital, is staffed with paid volunteers. Most of these volunteers maintain other occupational full time jobs and volunteer their time to cover EMS call daily. Some hold other positions within the Hospital. Staff includes Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT) and Paramedics. The service is classified by the Kansas Board of EMS as a Type 2A service. This classification provides Basic Life Support (BLS) with Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities. Horton EMS covers the south half of Brown County, Kansas, including the cities of Horton, Everest and Willis, the Kickapoo Nation Reservation, Golden Eagle Casino and Sac & Fox Casino. Horton EMS also provides transfer capabilities from the Horton Community Hospital to other facilities such as KU Medical Center, Children’s Mercy, St. Francis Medical Center (Topeka), Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center (Topeka), and Heartland Regional Medical Center (St. Joseph, Mo.), which is a vital service to a Critical Access Hospital.
